The Newport Cornucopia was launched with the aim of uncovering interesting, historic and quirky articles and adverts from the last 150+ years of Newport's history.

The archives of newspapers such as The South Wales Argus, Monmouthshire Merlin, The Cardiff Times and The Western Mail reveal a whole cornucopia of information such as the details of council meetings, the construction of new streets and buildings, quirky crimes and the evolution of how goods and services were advertised.

South Wales Argus, Monday 3rd October, 1898

What will be the format?

Every issue will feature a mixture of articles, adverts, personal ads, business adverts, crime reports and anything else that's interesting. Everything will be posted verbatim with minimal editorial content. The aim is to share what was published at the time and not to establish if everything that was written was factually correct. Sometimes the news stories could be ambiguous or biased but like those reading at the time, it will be left up to you to determine the accuracy.

How often are new issues released?

The aim is to release a new issue every weekend which can be viewed online or sent directly to your inbox. You can sign up for free below.
